Making an album is like enduring a three year bowel movement. You just want it to come out already so that you can see what it looks like.
I don’t listen to Readers & Reporters very much anymore, but when I do, it strikes me as a much more genuine album than Claye. There is something pure and innocent about it, even with its flaws. Claye tries very hard. R&R just is. I’m trying to bring back the pureness of R&R in Album Four, but with much better execution.
I think I’m going to hire a Mexican mariachi band to perform every time I get an erection.
Tonight was extremely productive. Probably the best recording session of the month. A lot of refinement of Song Four’s fundamental issues (rhythm was sloppy as all fuck). Guitar recorded.
A couple more sessions this week should do and then I move onto Song Five and Song Six in May.

Even though it won’t be out until 2018 at the soonest, Wall Street will always be a 2015 album to me. So much of it was dreamed up and written that year. So much was inspired by how I felt during that time.
It’s interesting to record and execute on an album inspired by feelings that are far behind you.
- Song Four—like all of them—proves to be harder to execute than initially imagined.
- It’s really hard to commit something that has been bouncing around in your head for over two years.
- It’s becoming abundantly clear that I really want to be making Album Nº5, but I really want to HEAR Album Nº4 exist. So I have to work through it. It will be worth it, but I am scared that it’s not going to be what I have been dreaming of for so long.
- Guide tracks are in—percussion session tomorrow and Sunday. Instruments (some) go in next week.
- I need to approach this in the way that I did with Claye during the early 2014 run: Relaxed four hour sessions several times a week with one main goal per session (record the bass, record the saxes, etc.). Otherwise, I just overwhelm myself. I need to approach it more pragmatically, it’s just hard to get started when I don’t know if any of my ideas are going to actually work in practice.
I will be recording tonight for the first time in a couple of months. This time attempting to begin Song Four.
